September Update

Among other things, the month of September signals the start of the new school year for many American students. I recall my own anticipation and excitement of those first days of school: I walked into school with shiny new shoes, a pristine backpack, cleanly wrapped text books and fresh notebooks with uncracked spines.

For the last year, I have imagined what will go through Penda, Awa and Adama’s minds as they walk through the hallways of their American college and sit in their first classes. What will they think of the dormitories? The food in the cafeteria? The school campus? The other students? Unfortunately, we were not able to raise enough money to send the three of them to school this semester but we are not giving up hope.

The summer was a slow time for the fundraiser so we are attacking the fall with a renewed vigor. We are planning a few local fundraising events and have developed a strategic outreach plan.

But we also need your support. If you have already donated, thank you a million times over. Please don’t forget to reach out to your network and ask them to also donate. And if you haven’t yet donated, please consider doing so, even if it’s $5. Every penny counts! If we get 6,000 people to donate just $5 we would cover the cost of the first year of tuition for all three students.
